As of the Going Deep update, small trout now seem to be rarer catches from fish traps. On the other hand, they have one of the highest bait values possible, which means a higher chance of rare fish when using the fishing rod. It is possible to farm for small trout to use as bait for said rare fish for even higher food gains.

You can harvest human meat and catch fishes for fat for your first furnaces. Unlike other types of meat, trout provides +15 hydration per bite, so you don't have to worry about stocking water.

Important note: the fish trap loses 10 health everytime it catches something, meaning that you should only put a maximum ammount of food equivalent with 9 catches.
