A small animal at the bottom of its respective food chain, the chicken is easy to kill and harvest for any player. Chickens don't yield much in terms of resources, but they are useful for new players who need some food or bone. They will peck when threatened, but the damage is laughable.

If you have a Chicken near your base, it is fine to keep it alive. When players are nearby, sneaking and doorcamping you, the chicken may reveal the enemy and goes violent and makes noises.
