The miner's hat is capable of doing all that the candle hat can, but with greater resistances to boot. It is, however, much easier to gauge where a player is looking if their light is on.

Since the patch update, the miners hat has gotten an incredible boost in protection at 20%. Add a bandana, and you're at 25%, nearly the same as a hazmat. They're found pretty commonly near or in caves and also have a significant advantage in that you can turn on the light while holding a weapon or hammer.
