If you're thinking about crafting gears: don't.
It's cheaper to buy a Modular Car Lift from the bandit camp (175 scap) and recycle it (500 metal + 5 high quality metal + 2 gears).

To add to /dev/null's excellent tip above, do NOT buy Gears from Outpost either. Currently they are 125 Scrap EACH, making /dev/null's tip to buy Modular Car Lifts so much more of a bargain. By buying the Modular Car Lifts at Bandit Camp and recycling them there, you get two Gears for just 50 Scrap more, plus Five High Quality and Five hundred metal fragments.
Edit: FP have changed things around, Chainsaws are now the best way of buying Gears, you will get High Quality Metal ×3, Gears ×1, and Metal Blade ×3, for 125 Scrap.

elevator and car lift now give 50% chance to get one gear. they really don't want you getting one cheaper than 100 scrap. if you really need them recycle extra gates, armored doors, and hatches, or else run roads.
