If you have time or you are able to farm a box of wood early. Try and do it. Doing this will make you be able to focus on other things such as running monuments or pvp while you dont have to worry about wood and you can constantly refill your furnaces.

Bigger trees generally give more wood, but have to be hit more. If you are farming a spear or bow with a rock, pick a smaller tree to save time. Not a small runt sappling, or a big trunk, you want those spindly ones for easy ~300 wood.

Trees at the swamps will yield less wood than the trees further out from those areas.
