Charcoal

Charcoal is the byproduct of wood when used for smelting in a campfire or furnace. It is used in conjunction with sulfur to craft gunpowder, a key ingredient for ammunition and explosives. Though it may be tempting to throw charcoal away, large quantities will be required in later stages of the game. Keep it if you can.

The small oil refinery produces charcoal the fastest burning 1k wood in 25 minutes versus 33 minutes 20 seconds in furnaces or over 2 hours in the grill, campfire or fireplace.

large quantities are needed, but large quantities will be made regardless of whether you want them or not.
you'll have tons of it, but don't throw it away - it'll come in handy later.

If you are using electric furnaces, you'll be receiving far less charcoal then you usually would be. Consider constructing a wood burner.
