Personally I've had some mixed luck with these crates but most of the time they are sort of worth it if you have friends to back you up. Fortunately now that the timer can no longer be increased due to player input, there are 15 minutes during which you need to wait for the crate to unlock. You're more likely to trigger the crate just for the Heavy Scientist spawn event, which in itself is easy to deal with if you have people with you; if you're by yourself, you'll have to pick a comfortable spot somewhere to take down the Heavy Scientists, headshots are recommended.
Finally, it's vital that you listen for incoming boats.
